CHEM2201 is a course designed for students planning a profession in a chemistry related field and introduces the general principles of organic and biochemistry, allowing students to appreciate their impact on everyday life.

Topics include: physical and chemical properties of hydrocarbons: alkanes, alkenes and arenes; halogen derivatives; hydroxyl compounds: alcohols and phenols; cabonyl compounds: Aldehydes and ketones; carboxylic acids and esters; nitrogen compounds; and biomolecules: carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids.

It is also geared towards making students familiar with the structure, function and synthesis of the four basic organic chemicals of life: carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and nucleic acids.

Students will learn how to link structure to function for the four groups of molecules and be able to project possible consequences of structure alteration for any of these compounds.
